MPI for Biogeochemistry

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) is one of three Max Planck Institutes in Jena. It was founded in 1997 by the Max Planck Society and is dedicated to the study of global cycles of essential elements on Earth, their interactions among the biosphere, atmosphere, geosphere and the oceans, and their interrelation with the physical climate system. The institute’s main research focus lies on understanding ongoing changes in global biogeochemical cycles and identifying the key processes that govern their dynamics under current, past and future environmental conditions. including C-14 and Eddy-Covariance measurements, laboratory incubations, experimental manipulation studies, model-data integration techniques and machine learning on scales ranging from field studies in Siberia or the Amazon to modelling on the global scale.
